The Committee for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality today adopted an Opinion on the European Green Employment Initiative – calling on the Commission to ensure that women are taken into account, and benefit from its Green Jobs programme.
Julie, who was Shadow-Rapporteur for the Socialists and Democrats on the file, coordinated the process on their behalf with the other political groups of the parliament.
The Opinion calls for the Green Jobs programme to take into account the obstacles women currently face when faced with entering sectors with male-dominated organisational cultures, and the importance of encouraging women into education in the fields of science and technology. Likewise, the text called for the Commission to ensure that Green Jobs that are created are high-quality jobs, with high standards of social protection, and that the programme benefits women across sectors and skill-brackets, including women in rural environments or in marginalised communities.
The Committee voted overwhelmingly to adopt the report, 31 in favour to 2 against, much to Julie’s delight.
Earlier on in the session the Committee also voted to bring up the issue of the Maternity Leave Directive with the Commission and the Council at this upcoming Plenary session in Strasbourg. The Parliament has made clear it is willing to negotiate to get the Directive through, and would like to see the Council take a position. The Commission in turn has said it will withdraw the Directive, and in that case, the Women’s Rights Committee would like to see a strong legislative proposal to be put up in its place.
The Socialists and Democrats Group has led the way in this struggle for this landmark piece of legislation to be adopted, a Directive that would change the lives of millions of women across Europe. More to come on this, but for now, Julie call on the Commission and Council to deliver now!
